Stop Smoking Program

Getting to the point…Why should I stop?
There are overwhelming health reasons for wanting to stop smoking. Smoking increases the risk/development of:

  1. stroke or heart attack;
  2. lung disease
  3. chronic bronchitis
  4. emphysema
  5. lung cancer (and many other cancers)r
  6. hypertension
  7. atherosclerosis
  8. back pain
  9. osteoporosis

In addition, if you’re pregnant, smoking is bad for the unborn child; it is associated with low birth weight and increases the risks of cot death

Also, children living in smoking households are move likely to suffer from respiratory infections than those in non-smoking houses, and much has already been made of the increased risks of most of the above conditions for passive smokers

Finally, smoking is becoming more and more socially unacceptable as the smoker is now considered a threat to the health of non-smokers

So how does our combined treatment work?

Acupuncture works by decreasing the physical cravings for tobacco.  It also lessens the symptoms of withdrawal and has a generally sedative effect on the nervous system.  Beta-endorphin, the natural hormone which causes physical relaxation and reduces sensitivity to pain, is released by the acupuncture treatment.  This production of beta-endorphin is part of the physical mechanism which makes it possible to quit smoking

Acupuncture is administered to special points on the ear, hand, wrist and sometimes feet.  Each treatment lasts about 30 minutes.  Thereafter, minute sterile retainer needles or press pellets are inserted into the ear and remain in place for a few days.  These “ear-tags” serve to exert a constant mini-stimulus to special points found helpful in reducing withdrawal symptoms

Acupuncture, will not help you to reduce the habitual associations you have with smoking, eg activities such as driving, drinking coffee/alcohol etc…this is where hypnotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy is a safe, relaxing and gentle way to stop smoking by eliminating the cause of the  habit right at the source…ie the subconscious mind.  The subconscious mind creates the nagging desire for a cigarette and becomes caught up in the smoker’s response to different situations and emotions, eg stressful times, when out having a drink, etc

The reason why so many people have problems quitting smoking by using their own willpower is because willpower is a product of the conscious mind.  The conscious mind likes to think that it’s in control, when really it’s our subconscious mind that is driving our behaviour.  That’s why willpower doesn’t work and why people go back to smoking within the first few days of trying to quit using willpower alone.

While nicotine is both physically and psychologically addictive, the physical addiction feeds off the psychological one. So if the psychological addiction is taken care of with hypnotherapy to stop smoking, then the physical one is a lot easier to contend with.  With hypnotherapy we break down all the activities people associate with their smoking.
Hypnotherapy creates a change in the way people respond to situations that trigger the urge to smoke.  Clients stop smoking without feeling deprived…they simply have no interest in cigarettes

Hypnotherapy is a safe and proven way to stop smoking and is far removed from the type of hypnosis depicted in stage hypnosis where individuals appear to lose control and go “under” the spell of the hypnotist

Hypnotherapy uses a very normal and natural state of altered consciousness / awareness, one we all experience from time to time in which the remind remains clear, alert and focused.  Similar to the feeling you get when you become really absorbed in your favourite TV show or book, when daydreaming or when you slip into “auto pilot” mode when driving and start thinking about something else at the wheel.

Ready to Go!  What now?

Please note, for both of these treatment options, it is imperative that you really want to stop smoking.  Neither treatment can make you do something you are not strongly motivated to accomplish

In preparation it is helpful to:

  1. set yourself a time and day from which you are going to stop;
  2. plan to stop completely;
  3. ask your friends and relatives for help.  They should try to avoid smoking when with you.
  4. avoid those situations you connect with smoking (particularly in the early days);
  5. get rid of everything connected with smoking (ie ashtrays, lighters, remove all evidence of smoking from your home and car);
  6. wash/dry-clean your clothes to get rid of the smoke smell;
  7. take one teaspoon of Bicarbonate Soda in a glass of orange juice to stave off cravings

NB: The concern of weight gain is not an issue as we also control your craving for food as part of our treatment program.

The benefits of our “STOP SMOKING” program

Rather than offering the one session and then wishing you “all the best”, we provide a number of sessions so that we can support and guide you throughout the entire process of your smoking cessation…and we do this for the same cost (if not less) that others currently charge for one session alone!

We do this because we believe that multiple sessions are far more effective as they enable us to reinforce the initial treatment and to adapt the program to suit your progress.  With this added support, you have a far higher rate of success than that offered in a one session treatment

Body Changes Following Stopping Smoking

  • Blood pressure decreases to normal (20 mins)
